Naming labels that stall tasks

Handwriting notes in a lined notebook

Analytics rarely name a label as the culprit, yet rage clicks, rapid back-and-forth between fields, and abandoned forms often cluster around wording that staff understand and customers do not.

During friction discovery we look for steps where time-on-screen rises while completion falls. Those steps deserve a close reading of every visible noun: button verbs, helper text, and error messages.

A useful test is to read the screen aloud to someone outside the product team. If they must ask what a term means before they can decide, the label is already costing you completions.

Fixing labels is rarely glamorous, but it frequently unlocks more recovery than rearranging layout. Capture the old and new wording in your remediation notes so later analytics comparisons stay honest.
