Reading drop-off without guesswork
2025-11-12
Drop-off on a key path often triggers an immediate redesign impulse. Before changing screens, confirm that the decline tracks with behaviour rather than calendar effects, campaign spikes, or a broken event.
Start with a stable window. Compare the same weekday pattern across several weeks, then isolate segments that share a device class or entry source. A friction point that appears only after a particular campaign landing page may belong to messaging, not the application itself.
Next, pair the funnel step with a qualitative sample. Even a handful of session patterns at the failing step can show whether people hesitate on a label, abandon after an error, or leave because the task is complete earlier than the funnel assumes.
When the evidence points to friction, write the finding in plain language: who, which step, what they did, and how severe the loss is for the business path. That sentence becomes the brief for design and engineering—not a vague call to improve conversion.
